  • I got made redundant on New Years Day 2010...
  • Public sector, so an enemy of the state, so only got 2% when inflation was 4% so effectively a 2% pay cut.
The acquisition of wealth is no longer the driving force in my life. :)

I know I am one of the lucky ones but I received a rise of 15% from 1st Jan this year. Our company (manufacturing) has been through a tough period over the last 12 months, not losing customers but seeing them reduce their orders overall. The shopfloor and staff have all been through short time or voluntary unpaid holidays. Temps have gone, departments trimmed back through redundancies and retiring employees not replaced.

In my case our department reduced by 50% with two retirees not replaced so the extra work and pressure placed on me resulted in said pay rise.

The general rise for our company was 1% after a pay freeze last year.
  • I work for a County Council and got a 1% pay rise last year. Some might say I was lucky. However lets put this in perspective. I joined the Council in 2005 and every year since then my pay rise has been BELOW inflation. so in real terms I've had a pay cut. Whilst I know times are hard in the private sector at least there have been good times in the past. As a Local Authority worker, on the pay front there is no such thing as 'good times' for us they don't exist. So we haven't had the benefits that the private sector enjoyed in the boom years. Now we are expected to take pay cuts??! And before anyone starts on about job security and 'gold plated pensions' those things are already being undermined with changes already in place on the pension front and massive job losses expected in the next 12-18 months. (The average local authority pension actually paid is pitifully small).

I still have a job (for now) - I have to be grateful for small mercies.

  • I work in the private sector and got a 2% rise. Not bad given the state of the market I work in.
  • I work in the third sector - what about charities and co-ops - we werent on the list!
  • Work as an engineer in R&D for a multinational company.
This year has been the 2nd consecutive year of pay freezes, although in 2009 we were layed off for 2 weeks unpaid, which effectively was a paycut for 2009.
  • Pay freeze is not a new phenomenon.
I worked for a major telecoms company and with the dot com downturn from 2001 I did not get a payrise for 6 consecutive years (not even inflationary)
