overboarding with PB is the best way.
taking the old ceiling down is a last resort. believe me its very very dirty!

As Ormus says, overboard it and skim, Ripping old cieilings down is dirty dirty dirty.... especially if it is old lath ceiling. Also, another thing to consider is there could be asbestos in it.
If you have pieces that have fallen away, these can be packed out along the joists with "rips" of board to bring it level with existing plaster and then completely overboarded and skimmed. Average size room say 4 x 4 metres should cost no more than £350 all in (worcestershire prices, prob more in London, Less in other parts of country etc)

the appartment its late 60s but i dont know if the artex was done later- it looks like the picture ---i dont know ifs its asbestos--nothing has actually come apart--just it has more waves than the high seas-- very helpful advice i feel much happier--i had a picture of me tearing it all down! -i love this site!!! thanksmfw'11 No68- 55k mortgage İO--little to nothing saved! i must do better.0
