Currently having broadband problems and to save the ISP and BT both saying they haven't got a problem. I'm thinking a cheap back up modem might be worth having.

Any ideas which will do the job on the cheap cheap (won't be used on routine basis) and from where..

Many thanks

I had similar problems last year. Fortunately it was solved before I had to buy a test modem. At the time I noticed Maplin had a couple of basic adsl modems, the USB one is £14.99.

ADSL problems are very rarely caused by the router.

The cheapest place to get one would be eBay I suspect.

I know but you are much stronger ground when you can say you have used two routers/modems.

I'm leaving them to it but I think the last time I had a similar problem I somehow managed to get through to the BT exchange and the guy just switched something over/on/ off and it was sorted.

Wish I could manage that again but who knows what the problem is.

telling them you've tried 2 different modems AND unscrewed your bt master socket to test from the internal master test point would put you in a stronger position too.

make sure you follow the advice kiwi gave in another thread ans ALWAYS switch off your modem BEFORE unplugging the phone line from it to avoid screwing your profile at the exchange for a few days....

regarding original question ebay for a cheap USB one is probably lowest cost option, or ask around friends to see if someone has a spare -I have an ancient ZOOM USB one and an old one I got from an old ISP kicking around
