Dial up problems

I am having a problem getting my Dell server to connect to the internet. The modem is dialling but it waits a few moments then comes up with an error msg. I am using my ISP's username and password that works on my previous server and am using the same modem!
Am I being stupid or can I be helped?????
Hope this is in the right place.
Thanks :)

Sorry I will have to get a copy of the error msg and put it on the site but it says something about a problem with the isp hardware(there isnt), a problem with the modem(also fine) or a problem with the way they are trying to connect.
Is there a language that is common to computers connecting over the internet that may not be pre defined on a unit bought straight from Dell? This is the first computer I have installed the operating system on so I may have missed something along the way.
    Thanks for the response anyway.
  • Have you run diagnostics on the modem while it is attached to the 'new' server?

I have run troubleshooter on it which comes up with a screen with no 'resource' tab (as per help menu. This advised me to contact modem manufacturer but they have simply give me a new driver to install - still no reource tab.
Is this the same as diagnostics or should I be doing something else?
Whenever I check the modem in the hardware section computer replies that the modem is working.(actually this may be the diagnostics bit?)
    Thanks again

It would really help if you listed your operating system and the exact error message you are getting.

I know it might sound silly, but have you double checked the cable? Computers can have more than one phone type socket on the back. It's easy to mistake them.

  • You say the modem is dialing out - can you HEAR the dialtone, the tones from the modem as it 'dials' the number, and the screeching, whirring and clicking (OK - YOU describe it better! ;) ) as the connection is negotiated? Or are you just assuming it is dialing out as that is what the screen is saying it is doing?

(Sorry, that all sounds a bit blunt and patronising - I don't mean it to be!)
  • This won't be helpful until you can get to another pc, but ......

I had a similar problem some time ago. I just copied the message and did a search. I found the problem was fairly common and I got the solution. ;)

    Hope it helps!

This is great. Thanks for all the response.
    It is Windows 2000 Server
The connections are fine and in properly
The external modem is making all the correct noises, the lights are showing a connection up to verifying username and password then the line drops.
Will also try the cut and search on the error msg.
Thanks a lot for everyone's help.
    :)
  • I assume that the other ('old') server is not still logged on at the same time, as that one now has no modem attached??

Who is your ISP and is there anything on their website about troubleshooting connection issues? Some are better than others about this.

If you are still no further forward, let us see a copy of the FULL error message. It may give us a clue! ;)

The ISP have said they can send out a disk to check the computers settings. I was hoping I could find a way without waiting for something to arrive in the post(who knows when?).
I will have access to the computer tomorrow so I will post the msg (just wish I had got it now).
Thanks again for all the interest shown. I will keep you all updated.
    Cheers
    :)
