Bit of advice re: breakdown, AA, possible trip to the garage.
Hello everyone, you were so helpful last time I thought I would come back.
Im afraid Im a stereotypical girl and I know nothing about cars and have no one to ask so please could you help at all?
My 1998 Fiat Cincqucento developed a problem yesterday, a couple of times the reverse didnt engage and then the gearstick became totally loose (like a spoon in a bowl, wobbles everywhere). I managed to limp it home, it goes into gear okay (mostly) but its just kinda crazy with that gearstick wobbling around.
After some googling it looks as though my gear selector cable is shot, and I have myself clued up at about how much it should cost and the possible problems (ordering part from fiat dealer).
So how does it work now. I assume I call the AA, they come out, fix it if possible (although if it needs a new cable it will probably have to go to the garage), if not do they take it to the garage? How should I best deal with the people at the garage to maintain a good 'deal'. Should I go in confident I think i know what the problem is to show ive researched it? How likely is it to be cheated?
Im sorry if this sounds a stupid question but any help or annecdotal evidence will be so helpful in going into this situation fully prepared.
