Gym refuses to honour their part of the deal

I signed a 12-month contract with my gym in Lewisham in December 2008, Dec 2008 would be free, the contract would start from Jan to Dec 2009 and I would get 3 months free (after Dec 2009). He said an additional 2 more free months was possible as well. He couldn't waive my initial gym fee because of all the free months, so I thought 'ok enough haggling'.
The free months was not written in the contract paper and the person who I signed the deal with doesn't work there anymore. There is no proof of the free months, it was merely verbally part of the contract. I asked a few times during 2009 to confirm my free months but they always told me to 'check back in December'.
I paid for Dec 2009 using a credit card, and had my direct debit cancelled. Now my gym membership is cancelled because I apparently cancelled it. I did not. Why would I cancel when I have at least 3, potentially 5 free months? Now they're are not honouring the free months because it's not in the contract paper. I feel cheated. What can I do? thanks.

Unfortunately without any proof that you were offered the free months there's not a lot you can do, so in future make sure you get everything in writing.
The only thing I can think is to try contacting other members of the gym to see if any of them have had similar issues, just in case this is a scam they're trying to get away with, rather than just a one off.0 -
A contract can be verbal to, problem is you still have to have some proof ie like a witness otherwise its there word against yours0
