Double Glazing - Anglian - too much??

Hi All,
Just bought a new house and I hate the current windows, they are the old wooden type ones. No locks on them, and the corners are all mouldy and black and icky... I want the nice new uPVC ones!
Had Anglian round today and they quoted an on-the-spot sign up price of £4300 for the following:
2 large windows (1.74 metres wide), 2 small windows (1 metre wide), 1 small window flipstyle for the bathroom (1 metre wide) and 1 tiny window for the WC (40cm wide).
To also do a front door, and a new set of patio doors it was going to be £5800.
This included having photos taken of the house for them to use as marketing, and also having a "Done by Anglian" board outside for 4 weeks. I said "no thank you, was more than I had anticipated" and he said he couldn't leave the quote with me, and wouldn't be able to honour it after today. If I didn't sign up there and then, I would lose the 40% discount I was getting. Can they do that??
I have Zenith coming round this evening and I am waiting on some local firms to contact me next week but I just wondered if I was being a bit daft or not. It sounds very expensive to me?
Thanks for any opinions,
Rachel

Please don't fall for that "you have to sign up now or it will be dearer" rubbish. Check out smaller firms in your area. Ask to see examples of previous jobs and if they are kosher then it will not be a problem for them. The big companies are to be avoided in my opinion. That quote sounds very excessive to me but having said that, I don't know where you live and it could be different in other parts of the country although I wouldn't know why. Cheeky !!!!!!s should be paying you for advertising anyway.
Just don't rush into anything until you are completely happy.

My ex is a fitter for Anglian and believe me they are bodge workers. I'm not just saying that because he's my ex either. He used to admit it himself that him and the rest of his team knew nothing about fitting windows and used to get the job done as quickly as possible just to get paid.2008 Comping ChallengeWon so far - £3010 Needed - £230Debt free since Oct 20040

I wouldn't touch them, they quoted me for some work and gave me a quote of £5500. I subsequently got another firm (Trent Valley Doors & Windows) who quoted me £2500 for the work. Trent Valley got the job and the doors and windows are great. I would shop around for a local firm rather than a national firm.0

We had Safestyle and cannot find fault with the windows or workmanship. Cost £3000 - 8 windows and a door.
We had Anglian for a quote, twice the price and horrible salesmen. Wouldnt touch them because of the salesmen attitude but then some people dont like Safestyle.

I'm in Thornbury, near Bristol.
Well Zenith came round last night - really really impressed with their salesman, he was nice, honest and not pushy. BUT his quote was even higher than Anglian, he came in at £4699 with 40% discount already taken off. I fibbed about what I had already been quoted and he phoned head office. Eventually the price for just the 7 windows was £4239.
Its just too much for us, so I'm getting some local firms in as well to see what they can do, and have asked Safestyle for a quote as well. I guess our choice is not to bother at all, do the windows one at a time, or buy them ourselves from B & Q. Hmmm.
Thanks for all your replies, I'll let you know how I get on with the local companies.

Any joiner can do it. They dont need to be Fensa registered you can get a local councill inspection certificate for £60 that covers it.
Fitting plastic windows is a doddle its basically putting a square peg in a squre hole.0
