Tiling a hearth?

Hi,

I am looking for some advice on tiling a hearth. I am looking to install a gas stove in a fireplace opening and have a tiled hearth for it to sit on. I have been told by the plumber fitting the stove that I need to have the current level raised up so that it sits 50mm above the laminate flooring but I have no idea what to use to do this? Does anyone have any advice?

Cheers

you can use anything that is non combustable. ie concrete or slabs. or even metal.
you can tile over the top for your final finish if you so wish.

  • Thanks for the advice. I have had a quote for this work and the tiler mentioned that you can even use wood or chipboard to build it up as long as it's sealed properly with tiles and a heat proof adhesive???

I used B+Q slate slab for the base where an open cradle type grate sits, is about an inch thick, just dropped on a thick bed of fairly stiff mortar. Think it cost about £4 for a 2x2' slab. The rest of the hearth was done with 5 smaller slate squares which where about 1x1' about £2 each if i remember correctly, the fireplace was built with reclaimed brick which cover the height difference between the hearth and fire base.

there is a regulation which allows certain construction as above. but there must be a 50mm air gap between any wood and the underside of the hearth.

ive never known anyone to bother doing that. just as easy make the whole thing out of concrete or slab etc...
