Connecting Laptop to TV

Options
I've managed to connect my Dell inspiron laptop to my Pannasonic TV but the only problem I have now is that I cannot get a full screen picture on my TV.
Can anyone offer any advice about whether I need to adjust the settings on my laptop or TV.
Thanks

    What Laptop have you got?
    What TV have you got?
    What cable are you using?

Have you changed the graphics card in the laptop?

If you can provide that info - then we might be able to help better.

But at a guess - maybe your graphics card doesn't support the resolution of your TV? Try looking through the GFX card properties - right click on desktop > display settings.

    e00c,
Thanks for the reply,my laptop is a dell inspiron 6400 and my tv is a panasonic TH37PX80B and I haven't changed any graphics card.
I believe that my tv and laptop are connected correctly as I have a picture and sound from what is playing on my laptop, its just that the picture on my tv does not fill the full screen,it covers about 2/3rd of it and is showing as a ratio of 16:9,which is the highest setting available.
    hope this helps.
  • What graphics card does your inspiron have ? does your desktop display ok on your tv or is it squashed ?? Sounds like you may need to edit the second display properties on your laptop to match the tv

I think the graphics card is a Intel(R)945 GM Express chipset family ? does that sound correct ?
The desktop display on the tv is a little fuzzy but definately viewable,as I said its when the picture goes onto the tv screen its like its in cinema scope and not full screen.
Thank for the replies so far.

Do you have the TV mirroring the display on the laptop, or have you extended the desktop onto both screens?

If it's the former, look for a key on your laptop that sets it to VGA output only (i.e. disables the LCD display). On mine it's Fn-F5. When I do this the resolution is automatically set appropriately for the TV, but if not then just manually play with the graphics settings until it looks about right

Has the TV got different screen modes (my 10 year old one has). In 'Auto' mode rather than 16:9 it detects the black borders and expands the pic to fit. If your TV has that possibility it might work.
