BMI amex payments

in Credit cards
Hi ,we have a BMI amex card purely for the air miles,so we spend on everything we possibly can, shopping and anything we can buy with it that we normally would.
We make sure that we pay all that we spend,so i was annoyed when i was charged interest because we were roughly £140 short of the balance for the last month.
I was to understand that we have 28 days from the date of EACH purchase to pay it off.
As we have more than a few purchases on each statement is it within their(MBNA BMI amex) power to change around which purchases get paid off first?(IE the most expensive first?).
Also i explained to the call center worker how we use our card and he was completely stuck and couldnt comment.:(
Because we take care to always pay what we spend and had no trouble in 6 months maybe we are doing something wrong????
Any comment would be helpfull
Cheers
Spencer

Minimum time is from end of the statement period to payment due date. Maximum time is more like 56 days (1st day of statement period to payment due date).
EDIT: If you don't pay your balance in full, you'll be charged interest. It's what happens."A child of five could understand this. Fetch me a child of five." - Groucho Marx0
