Advice needed on most efficient way to run boiler for heating please.

Hi there,
Our boiler has always been set very high - so high in fact that if I switched the heating on at the control panel for 5 minutes in the morning the house would be red hot all day - the radiators just didnt cool down for hours and hours - even if the thermostat on the wall was set at 20c.
However, I have now turned the boiler temperature down and when we put the heating on at the control panel the radiators are at a normal temp and they cool down rather quickly once we've switched the heating off which is what I would expect.
Now I've done this though we obviously need to have the heating on for a lot longer than previously - my question is - which way will be costing me more money?
a) the boiler being set very high but only having the heating on for 5 mins a day?
or
b) the boiler being set at a lower temp but having the:) heating switched on for several hours a day?
If anyone has any advice I would appreciate it very much!
Thanks,
Kirsty

In theory option b should cost a little less, but I doubt you will see any saving on your bill. Lowering your room and / or radiator thermostats will save you money."A nation's greatness is measured by how it treats its weakest members." ~ Mahatma Gandhi

record gas meter reading , dont use owt else other gas boiler for 5 mins , take another reading .
next day do same again , but put heating on lower .
Whats the difference ?
