Maybe you're not cute looking enough to attract stalkers.
Maybe you're not living in a bit of a dodgy area.
Maybe you're not on the ground floor.

I wouldn't dare leave windows open, even on the 1st floor ... you'd be surprised how easily burglars/ne'er do wells can climb. In my studio, even on a Sunday afternoon, if I popped to the loo I'd close the living room window "in case".

Up until this last winter I pretty much opened my windows daily year round (barring rainy days), often in a morning before work so the place gets an icy blast, I shut the windows and leave! On days I have remained home I am surprised how quickly the flat gets back up to the temperature, purely from the benefit of the neighbours.

The statistics for burglaries in this ward are zero or near as damnit which is apparently the norm for city centre flats. My flat is on the second floor and faces out onto a busy thoroughfare: the windows are tilt and turn so can be left partially open fairly safely and tinted glass so you can't see in. This is pure speculation but, as my block used to be offices, open windows during daylight hours might not attract the wrong sort of attention.

Whether everyone could do the same on a daily basis depends on your lifestyle and depends on the location of the flat: my brother is on the ground floor and they both work long hours so they purchased a dehumidifier. I think once you own a property you look for a solution rather than living with the damp and mould or moving on as fast as possible! :p
