don't advise others to do so on a public forum and I won't have a reason to comment.

Why? Do you just have to comment because it annoys you? Or just to increase your post count? Why not ignore a post that doesn't involve you as I was talking to the OP?

If you want to nose through others mail, crack on: don't advise others to do so on a public forum and I won't have a reason to comment. You didn't open the post in order to prevent yourself getting chucked out as you didn't know what the letter contained until you opened it, did you?
But now it is all over the forums. Too much official looking mail coming to the rented property addressed to the Landlord is quite possibly bad news for the tenant. So now tenants will have a fair guess at the content.

Don't get me started on other people's mail coming to your address. We've moved. We are getting a hire purchase company chasing up the previous resident. We have even had 2 pieces of mail which we surmise is the result of the resident before that having an affair which is going on right now and using our address as a cover for a transaction on her credit card. Other people's mail coming to your address is bad news, I reckon.

i am not ashamed to have opened many pieces of ex-tenants mail in my time.... i have discovered all sorts of nefarious goings-on by doing so... - scams on housing benefits - scams on "pretend" road accidents to name but two...

if folks are responsible about their affairs, they will organise RoyalMail redirect (£42? pound for a whole year) - if they are running away from debts etc they dont organise mail-redirect and therefore should not be surprised if their mail goes astray or is re-directed back to sender

what shocks me in all this.. is that some large utility-type-firms simply write off unpaid debt after x number of months... so there is a hard core of folks not paying bills, moving house and getting away with it for years and years.....

Another reason why you should open other peoples mail that comes through your door!!!!!! We opened our landladies mail and found out her mortgage lender doesn't know the property is rented. I didn't know you could be evicted without notice and am very worried now :(

    Wrong.

It's illegal if you do so for pecuniary advantage - for instance you feel a credit card in the envelope and open it to steal and use it.

Once the mail is delivered to the address by the Royal Mail that's their involvement over with.

Best to return the mail marked "Not at this address" or "Gone Away".
