Faulty toy but no receipt anymore

I think I already know the answer but just wanted to check, I bought a baby playgym in Argos during Christmas week.
He's only 8 weeks today - was premature and only home from Hospital 18th Dec, we only bought it as the 6yr old believes in Santa - anyway I'm off track here. Basically I've only opened it and built it today.
There's a mad clicking noise when the wheel on the toy goes round and it takes ages to start up and running.
I've went onto the argos website and there are recent reviews stating the same things so I'm assuming it's not suppose to do this. I just can't find the receipt now, and I'm raging as I'd bought a baby bath and other items all on the same day. Am I right in thinking I can't now return this as faulty as I've no proof of purchase?
Thanks
Cate

You do not have to provide a receipt as proof of purchase you can give them a credit card statement for example.
If you know when you purchased it chances are there will be a record of it. Most companies can do a receipt trace if you know when and what you bought. If I were you I would go back to Argos and ask them if they can trace the purchase.0 -
As Leo said - if you can call the store in question, take a note of the name of the person you spoke to, and ask them - might save you a trip.
A receipt is not the only proof of purchase, and as it's less than 6 months old, you may have even more ammunition that there may be an inherent fault in it: up to 6 months old, the shop has to prove that it isn't a defect, after 6 months it would be up to you to provide proof.0
