I have recently been paid , and my tax had increased. I am now paying an additional £104 a month in tax!!! Not happy!!!
I have a new tax code of 14T, it was 647L.

I dot even understand what 14T is.

I have however managed to get through to the tax office and they agree that my tax is incorrect. I should be on 647L.
I too have to wait until the end of the month to 'hopefully' get this sorted out.

    What a joke...

As I'm not allowed to use links yet (!!), here is the long winded version of where to find information re: wrong tax codes.
Google 'HMRC'. In the middle of the home page is a section headed, 'We would like you to know', and the second item shown is 'Codes 2010/11'.

ps. How do I earn the right to use links?

Only looking back it appears I have been on BR CUMUL rate for two and a half years. How do I go about claiming any refund? I have changed employers (and tax office regions) several times over this period.

If your P60 issued at the end of each tax year was correct (i.e. included your pay and tax paid from all your employers that year) simply send them to our current tax office (keep a copy!) and ask them to check the amount of tax paid in case you are due a refund.

Otherwise, you could fill in a R40 form for each tax year in question.

    Regards
    Sunil

The T tax code is generally for those earning above £100,000, who from April 1st had the personal allowance withdrawn

It's simply for those where there are items that need to be reviewed. It can be used for people who split their allowances between two jobs plus those that don't have the full age related allowance.
  • Yep. Only realised this month that I am on D0 tax code and when I rang the tax office to find out why they informed me that thye changed computer systems a few months ago and, if the person wasn't 'flagged' in the old system as someone who had paid the higher rate of tax on only a small proportion of thier wages last tax year, when they moved over to the new system you would automatically be moved onto this new system on D0 - I was one of those people who wasn't flagged!!!

I never got a notification of tax code change so imagine how horrified I was to find my wages are now £100 lighter each month! Previously, I was 647L tax code, now I'm on BR tax code!!!!!! Great!!!!!!!! Just when I was getting on with my budget, I have to find some way of cutting £100 back!!!!!

Calling HMRC tomorrow to try and sort it out. I just hope that I dont have to wait a year to the next coding.

Thankfully, hubby got through at lunchtime today (after fifteen minutes on hold).
The conversation was not an easy one, as he had difficulty understanding the lady operative.
However, the outcome is that it was their mistake (as if we didn't know that!), and that he will be refunded the tax overpay via his employer next month. Next month!!?? It is their mistake, and yet it is we who have to struggle through the month with less money. How is that right?

The good news is that within a week a cheque was issued by hubby's employer to cover the shortfall, and a new, correct, tax coding came through within 10 days. All sorted! :j

Last time I called there was a message telling me not to wait on the line if my enquiry was about an incorrect Tax Code.

"Please don't worry, we aim to have all the issues resolved before the end of May" the message told me.

Voila, end of May comes and I am still £200 light for a second month.
