Anyone else got wrong tax code for 2010/11?

in Cutting tax
HMRC sent me a letter last week saying my new tax code for 2010/11 will be 16L. It seemed ludicrously low so I rang HMRC who told me they've been having problems with a lot of tax codes being wrong, and that in my case it should be 647L and they'll be putting mine right.
There's a news story from the BBC http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/8478271.stm who picked it up from the Chartered Institute of Taxation http://www.tax.org.uk/showarticle.pl?id=8884

Not yet !! but I am expecting it as their new computer seems to have developed a memory problem, a bit like an old lady getting her years mixed up0

Yep! Hubby has just got his payslip, and found to his horror that he has been put on the 'DO' code, which is 40% !!
Wouldn't be so bad if he really did earn enough to warrant such a code!
We're hoping madly that a visit to the pay office in the morning will shed some light on the problem, and advise how we can get the money back asap.0 -
HMRC have issued several hundred thousand wrong codes. You are not alone. The Treasury will get too much money so it will help to reduce the National Debt. Do your patriotic duty and pay too much tax!0

Mines changed too, I paid more tax than my boss this month which can't be right! Trying to phone them at the moment but having absolutly no luck0

Thankfully, hubby got through at lunchtime today (after fifteen minutes on hold).
The conversation was not an easy one, as he had difficulty understanding the lady operative.
However, the outcome is that it was their mistake (as if we didn't know that!), and that he will be refunded the tax overpay via his employer next month. Next month!!?? It is their mistake, and yet it is we who have to struggle through the month with less money. How is that right?0 -
Did he not get a Coding Notice (P2) sometime in Feb / Mar?If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0

Hubby hasn't had a coding notice since 2003, when he started his present job. I assumed that you don't get one unless things change? Even so, going by my own assumptions, he should have got one this year when it changed drastically!0

There's a bulk issue which starts in Jan every year .... and between 16M / 20M are issued .... so 'most' people do get one. However the selection criteria for who does get one - appears to be a bit shrouded in mystery. I get one every year and, with the exception of an underpayment coded out one year ...... my circumstances only vary in as much as the basic personal allowance changes.
Still it's been a funny year for Coding Notices! If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -
I got a D0 too - pay packet was tiny
Only looking back it appears I have been on BR CUMUL rate for two and a half years. How do I go about claiming any refund? I have changed employers (and tax office regions) several times over this period.poppy100 -
I had a D0 notice on my Pension back in Feb. I called, they said it was sorted, Viola! still D0.
Must be a billion people trying to call them, I don't even get in the queue, the message simply says, "they are all busy, goodbye"0
