Is it on or off?

After reading all the replies and comments to my post about leaving the heating on all the time as against putting it on timed, it appears that some people do not understand the difference.

Normal central heating of the gas type, mine is warm air heating but it does not make much difference, mine heats the air, radiators heat water, does not use gas all the time the heating is on.

The gas burns, heats the air or water and the room heats up, when the room heats up a device, known as a thermostat, tells the central heating to stop using gas.

The gas turns off, however the central heating is still switched on, as when the temperature in the room where the thermostat is gets cooler, it tells the central heating to turn on and use gas to heat the room up again.

However the temperature will probably drop to 19 deg C before the thermostat feels cold. This is known as hysteresis.

This continues throughout the day and night forever and ever, keeping the room where the thermostat is situated at an almost constant temperature of say 21 deg C if that is what it is set at.

This is having the heating on all the time 24/7.

Most people do not want nor need this level of heat during the night so they switch the heating off at say 10pm.

This can either be done manually or using a time clock.

There are 2 ways to turn the heating OFF manually during the night. Turn the gas off or throw a switch to prevent gas being used.

Another method used during the night is to turn the thermostat down to a lower temperature. If the thermostat is turned down to say 14 deg C and it is not cold outside and your house is well insulated and the temperature in the room where the thermostat is does not drop below 14 deg C, the heating will not turn on and no gas will be used.

However the heating is still on 24/7, but will wait until the temperature drops below 14 deg C before it uses gas again.

When using a time clock the heating will not come on again until the time on the clock tells it to. The heating is OFF. It does not matter what the temperature is, it is OFF. It will not come on until the time clock tells it to.

So to all these people who say that yes, I turn my central heating OFF by turning the thermostat down to 14 deg C, during the night, it is not OFF, it is still on, it just waits until the temperature drops below 14 deg C then it will start burning gas.

The only time your central heating is OFF is when it cannot use gas until either you throw a switch or a time clock switches it ON.
