Fiddiwebb, I was stuggling to see how to disable this when Browntoa emailed.

Browntoa, I've got it, thanks. It looks very different from what I was using!! Scan is running and i look forward to seeing the the results.

Ok, 2hrs 35 minutes later, the scan is complete and says no malicious items were detected.
Btw, the spyware doctor started whilst this process was running and is
saying 13 infections from Adware.IE plugin and some other minor bits.

Should I now continue to follow the earlier instructions, i.e. reboot and do Hijack or is there something else that would be more appropriate.

    thanks again for your help

I supect its clean , just to check can you download and run this

    HijackThis downloads:

    Installer

and then run it (click on the word installer)

it will produce a log file like the last one , can you post it please, it will tell us if there is anything bad running ;)

don't worry about any updates until we are sure the PC is clean

you then need to go to

    www.windowsupdate.com

and choose "express" , then download any updates you are offered

you may have to allow it to update "windows update" first or "allow an activex" to reach the outstanding updates.

  • I ran the Hijack this scan only and got an error message saying something like "you do not have write access to Host files, if a hijack issue exists in these files, Hijack this may not be able to deal with it" it had other things and then said "if running Vista (which I am) run hijack this as administator"

I was trying to type this message out to you when it completed the scan and I ticked the repair you suggested and needed to close the browser to complete. Computer seemed very unstable while the repair was taking place. I have also removed Spyware Doctor and had to close to complete. Computer was very slow to restart. Is this normal? Is there anything else I need to do?
