VW Polo fault light - diagnosing problem?

Hi

We've had two warning lights come up on dashboard - one is EPC (manual says engine management) and the other error code is re "manifold atmospheric pressure sensor".

Rang VW who want to charge £70 plus VAT just to diagnose the fault by plugging it into their computer which we think is daylight robbery! Especially as they said it might just be an electrical fault, i.e. the sensor light coming on by mistake.

Are in a quandary as not sure if car is okay to drive or has serious fault.

Please can anyone throw any light on what this manifold pressure fault thing is and if it's serious?

Does anyone know if a general garage be able to diagnose this problem or are we stuck with having to go to VW and cough up!

Thx for any help!

  • Could be the MAP sensor setting off the EPC.

Looks like no alternative than to plug it into a laptop, maybe you could get a better price at an independant garage, £70.00 is silly money.
I would not expect it to be a problem to drive (but I am no expert) as I would think the MAP affects the emissions.

Look for electrical diagnostics mechanics. Should set you back about half that and usually includes a code reset too.

If it is your map sensor you may be able to clean it with electrical contact cleaner but most garages will want to replace it.
  • Thx very much for the replies - I will look for an independent diagnostics person - didn't even know these people existed :o! Hopefully it should save some money.

Will also get a quote from an independent garage to replace the sensor and perhaps see if VW would price match is as their website talks about price matching.

    Thx again
