I like Freecycle/Freegle as quite often you can pass on things which you wouldn't necessarily take to a charity shop. For example, over the last few years I was doing up my house and had collected a lot of house/decorating magazines to get some ideas from. I passed those on last year to a lady who had just bought her first house. I had posted them just to see (or they were going to the recycling) and was surprised at how many people wanted them.
I have noticed lately though that some of the "wanted" posts seem to be quite demanding.

    recieved: ps2

Wow a ps2 ...What a great item I got one not so long ago and bought it off a friend and I thought I got a bargain :D

I have been an active freecycler for years....
I also received lots of furniture and houseware stuff when my son's marriage broke down and he moved into an unfurnished place with practically nothing

Bags of general household bits and pieces to a lady who was burgled by some 'friends' who she left her key with just before christmas a couple of years ago, leaving her with virtually nothing

You have just given me a great idea , My sister is hoping to get a flat next week that she has just been viewing , as she is 18 and has lived in a hostel for over a year now , due to her age she doesnt have much money and is studying and also does voluntree work in a charity shop which I doubt will get large items in there and other bits and bobs she may need , I have accumlated things that I have seen when out shopping for her for when she gets her place , but not having much money myself I cant afford to buy her much , so I will keep my eye on there for things going this wee k...Thankyou :)

I love the fact that the site helps out people in need and as youve mentioned someone who has had bad luck come there way , Its nice to know that you have done someone a very nice favour and helped them out especially at that time of year :T

I have given away a printer, scanner, plant, large toiletry bag, video, cd singles, empty cd cases.

I have received garden chairs, vegetable book and a manual lawnmower for my allotment, both from really nice people.

Must admit the sob stories I don't like, whether they are true or not I don't want to decide based on what someone says as you never know how true it is and I always just give to the first reply. You can sort of tell what sort of people they are when they come to collect anyway and I can't say they've all been that polite although I've not had a bad experience as such and some seem genuinely grateful or pleased to receive something which is nice. Still the main thing for me is that it's not just thrown in the bin so I'd rather someone want it.

I have given away just a few things, but some were pretty random...

    1. my old hiking boots which were in good nick but too narrow for my feet

    2. An adult rat costume!! Worn by my husband on his stag do but remarkably in very good condition. This was actually very popular!

    3. A London Irish training kit, given to my husband by his friend who worked for their PR firm, but way way way too big for him, I'm talking 46in chest rugby top and XXXXL tracky trousers... someone on my freecycle posted a wanted ad for clothes for her "really big husband" and she he was really pleased to get something brand new!

    4. My mum's pottery wheel - this was actually a cross-country freecycle - there was a wanted post on my freecycle in london and then about a month later my mum mentioned that she was wanting to get rid of her manual wheel. I dug out the email and the lady was still looking for one so i drove it from reading to london for her.

    5. just last week gave a now-unneeded wireless dongle to a lady so her teenage son could internet in his bedroom.. ooh err, not sure she knew what she was getting herself into with that but hey ho!

I have tried unsuccessfully to get rid of some old and new pieces of carpet. Ah well.

I've received 2 things - a few kilner type jars, and very usefully a really nice saucepan set for our rented house when the old set started peeling everywhere.

We moved into a new house before christmas and I have some DIY to do, so I think I am going to be asking soon to see if anyone has an old work bench I could have... and might be giving away some of my seed potatoes and garlic as I have far too much for my little veg patch this year!
  • Hmm, I've given away laminate flooring, a ladies bike that needed a little work, a TV stand and a hamster cage. I haven't actually taken anything...I've asked for things lots of times but been unlucky, mostly garden things. I do check it every day though and see what's available :)

I've never taken anything from Freecycle. I have used it to get rid of unwanted items though: a desk, an electric violin and some boxes of stuff for boot sales.

The most unusual item I have collected was some grown Beetroot, lots of it.
And rhubarb, the lady just grew too much.
And it turned out to come from very near the same area where my ancestors lived in 1697'ish. So a real connect.

My first give was a washing machine and over the years I've given lots of things - clothes, toys, anything that we didn't need anymore but that was too good to throw away. My best 'deal' was offering my old breadmaker and asking for a sewing machine. A lovely lady contacted me and asked for the breadmaker and told me that she had a sewing machine she needed rid of. We went to her house and she was lovely, invited us all in (even though we'd never met before) we had a look round her smallholding and did the swap. My sister and myself gave some furniture to a lady who had been homeless and even though it was way past it's best and included stuff like an old metal filing cabinet and faded curtains she was ecstatic and couldn't thank us enough. Brought a tear to my eye......

I've been Freecycling for a couple of years now and am lucky enough to be in an area between three different groups, so plenty of scope for getting rid of my odds and ends.

Yes, among lots of other stuff, I've managed to get rid of a box full of single earings, (I always lose one of a pair!), some large bras, (collected by a man - I didn't ask!), bagfulls of crab apples, (went to jam makers and one cider maker), willow withies from my living willow hedge, once-used padded bags and wrapping, two non-working motor mowers and some odd bits from our old shower fitting.

I tend to use Freecycle for getting rid rather than asking for stuff, but I have been fortunate in receiving a jelly bag (for straining fruit when making jam/jelly), a small kennel for turning into a hedgehog house, a snare drum for my grandson and a brand new garden incinerator.

I can honestly say that the people I've met when Freecycling have all been great, (maybe with the exception of the bra guy!). A couple have left little presents when they collected stuff and I always give a pot of home-made jam or chutney when I collect something.

Of course, you can always get the occasional greedy person who start ruining a good idea. I think the worst case locally was a recent call for a pale beige leather suite, in excellent condition and to be delivered, of course, as they didn't have transport! Ah well, I still think Freecycle is a great idea.
