can't stream to xbox from Vista PC

Options
Main reason I want to is because downloaded wmv files from iplayer will apparently stream to xbox and play on the tv - I did try sticking the file on a usb stick but xbox won't play it I'm guessing DRM

Anyway
Vista Home Laptop
O2 Router, the Thompson one
Xbox
WMP11 with the iplayer security bit added in

Laptop sees xbox in networking, media sharing set up in WMP11, in networking I can see the media server bit, have shared necessary folders, have removed firewall at one point as well

when I run xbox connection test it just constantly says it can't find any PCs on network

I have also plugged the xbox in via ethernet to the router instead of wireless, it tells me it knows about the cable and is using that instead but still nothing

I even went as far as plugging the laptop and xbox in directly with ethernet cables and no router, same thing laptop sees xbox, xbox ignores it

any ideas?
