I would try local insurance brokers. Look for ones in Yellow pages who mention commercial insurance. There are policies that are designed for home businesses and product liability is one of the options with these.

You may need to provide information from your supplier or show your competency if you are manufacturing yourself.

    What do you sell?

Are the items new or used?

Do you trade from home or proper business premises?

Where are the items manufactured eg Europe, America, China

I am trading from home selling jewellery. I want to start my own site but 1st rung of the ladder is ebay, with other retail sites to follow. All of the items are new, mainly manufactured in the uk with other sourced from uk wholesalers that import from overseas. I guess I will probably, in time, import myself but with the start up capital I have that just isn't going to happen at the moment.

    Thanks

As the previous poster has mentioned try a local broker (Not Swintons), they could sell you a Public / Product Liability Policy which will cost circa £230 or better still a Home Worker Policy which is a combination of home and business insurance and will include cover for business equipment, stock, cash, business interruption etc etc. The home worker would probably be cheaper and more suitable.

Your current home insurance might be invalid if you run a business from it.

Insurance for goods made in the UK and Europe is relatively easy to source, if you start buying outside this area (Especially America or China) it gets more expensive unless they represent a very small amount of your turnover (Some won't accept any percentage)

Mine is with a company in Northampton called Bluefin, but the only exception is that I am not permitted to sell to that litiguous hotbed of purile claims that is the USA.

If I wanted USA liability cover, it would have trebled my premium.

  • try Ian Wallace craft insurance http://www.craftinsurance.co.uk/
Mine was approx £60, that covers me for public and product laibility, useful as you may want to do school fetes etc - very cheap table fees and might be a good source of income for handmade jewellry, esp on a ladies night

    thanks but its not handmade.

I think I might have found indurance via NMTF. If you join they offer up to £5m of public and product liability in the joining fee of £88. This would cover me online as well as for markets etc if I decide to go down that route. I'm just waiting to hear back from them about ebay!!

    Thanks for all your replies....

  • If you are unsure if an insurance company will insure your (home) business in combination with Ebay, contact them directly.

Insurance experts of Moneysaving expert have writen a page about business insurance (moneysavingexpert.com/banking/small-business#ins) Try their tips and comparison websites as well.

    Good luck!
