Urgent knowledge on the Smart Car

my sister has had a gorgoeus Smart Car for 2 years, when she brought it, it had 20k on the clock.

Its been looked after and serviced reg, never had any problems with it.

A couple of months ago a van came round a bend and smashed into her car when it was parked, it hit her hard enough to shove her car over 10ft.

Anyway to cut a long story short the car was repaired by the insurers, but when she got the car back she was not happy with several aspects incl that she had a special scratch (paintwork) put on when she brought it and they now cant find anyone who does it any more. So have put the car back to black.

She has been emailing and they do not reply and so has now got the legal cover involved.

Anyway last week the engine light kept flicking on and off and she had a bit of trouble with the car. Took it to the garage and they said she had over filled the oil and would drain some out.

Last night the car was driving badly and this morning it wont start. When she rung the Smart specialist he said over the phone that its nothing to do with the accident and that she has done 40K and so it now needs a new engine that will cost £1700 + vat to do. Thats without a hire car and when she asked about going to Merc he said that they would charge her 6k for new engine which would include a hire car.

My question is, is this garage trying to have her over regarding needing a new engine at 40k just because its a good bit of work??

I really dont know a great deal about Smarts

Try the smart club website. There are smart independent specialists out there.

No, it is a new engine, not a new car.

The original Smarts in the UK were only warranted for 2 years and/or 25,000 miles. The premise being that they were city cars and unlikely to cover high mileages. Smart even bought back a car off a customer who covered 120,000 miles in 3 years in the earliest car.

The warranty has improved and I can't see why they won't hit 100k without too much trouble.
