grey border on desktop

I have a grey border on the left of the desktop, as if from Windows Explorer . The border can be widened by dragging, but always the same quarter of an inch all the time. How do I get rid of this. Tried restore.
Desktop is on lock. Any help appreciated. Thanks for reading.

1024x768 and TFT Dell. Neighbour was messing about with comp, I managed to correct everything by doing a restore but for the grey border.0

Neighbour has fixed the grey border, it was a new Toolbar for My Docs.
He probably asked IT at work how to.0
