Freecycle Etiquette

You'd have to look at your particular freecycles rules - mine has no problems with it - many people freecycle both in their home town and the town in which they work. 45 minutes seems a pretty short distance to me, and even if it wasn't, anything you get from freecycle is a gift, and I was always taught not to be rude about gifts!0

Right, well, since you regularly visit there the 45 minute travelling time is not an issue. We have a member, for example, who lives in the Midlands but works here in Sunny Suffolk. As a moderator I'll accept anyone who lives in my area, works here, or visits often.
If you said in your original post that you lived in one place but were frequently in the second - I can't see a problem. If the lady didn't read you right that's her problem, so if she gets uptight it's your call as to whether you just ignore her or take the trouble to explain again that you can get the item to her with no trouble.Hi, I'm a Board Guide on the Old Style and the Consumer Rights boards which means I'm a volunteer to help the boards run smoothly and can move and merge posts there. I believe there is a rule about using text speech though.
'a local site for local people' not Royston Vasey is it? :rolleyes:0 -

Fair enough, I guess. You have every right to choose who you do or do not gift to. There are absolutely no rules on this - except to say it's your choice.
As for the text speak - I hate it! I have made my first offer on freecycle today and was overwhelmed by the responses. Does anyone know the etiquette for these sites?
Many thanks. Jan.0 -
Etiquitte has gone out of the window on my local one. Everytime i offer anything i get begging emails by the dozen, its got so bad now i hardly bother with it. Its a shame cos its a good idea and there`s some great people on there.
I get rid of those that have no manners.0 -
I reply to the most polite email, which is not always the first person to respond. I don't reply individually to everyone else, once the item has been collected I post on freecycle that it's been collected. Also if it's a name I recognise as offering items regularly then I'd be more likely to give them the item. I too ignore those with no manners (there seem to be rather a lot on freecycle), but most people I've dealt with have been lovely so don't let the baduns put you off.0

I too offer it to the person who sends me the politest email. Emails which go 'I'll pick it up at x time' get instantly disregarded, as do the 'my brother's friend's dog's died so I must have it' ones.
There isn't really an etiquette, you're giving it away for free so give it to the one you like the best.0 -
Thank you for your help.
I was offering a dyson DC14 and was totally overwhelmed by the e mails.
I think I may have chosen the wrong person looking at the replies.
I shall just have to learn from the experience.
Thanks again. Jan.0
