My daughter had that when she moved into a new house, it was the overflow pipe as it is corrugated. Just take it off and give it a good clean, preferably in a basin and put it back before you empty the basin.

Sink overflows tend to get overlooked during normal cleaning leading to a semi-dry build-up of general gunge so try flushing that out a few times. Either let the sink overflow through it for a while or use something to squirt water in.

OK a more technical approach. Whats the depth of water seal on the existing trap? It needs to be 3 inches. If it isn't and / or there is a long vertical drop for the waste water you are possibly syphoning the water out of the trap every time you pull the plug out.

The water seal is there to prevent nasty niffs coming back into the room from the waste. If its missing you get the smells and no end of pouring stuff down it is going to solve it.

If syphonage is what is happening fit a trap with a bigger water seal or alternatively an anti-vac trap.
