Potatoes ...

Hi
Please can anyone advise me what potatoes are good for general usage. I tend to buy new potatoes, baking potatoes and either Desiree/King Edward every week and each week I have at least one pack which I need to throw away!
I want to be better at planning meals - and need to eonomise - and have almost decided to go with white potatoes as these are the cheapest in the supermarket.
Is this what people buy or do they buy different types each week?
Thanks in advance

Maris Piper, I use them for everything.
Chipping, mashing, baking, there a brilliant all rounder in my opinion.0 -
Maris Piper - these are great
We go to a local farmshop for a small bag which lasts us ages..This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -

Are you feeding an army? You must be if you buy new potatoes, baking potatoes and either Desiree/King Edward every week. I always keep my spuds in the garage where its cool & dark, I also remove them from the plastic bags as they sweat and then deteriorate.0

I get a large 25kg sack from local farm shop for a fiver. They are usually estima or maris piper. As previously mentioned kept in the garage i get a good 6 weeks out of them and then it is time to buy a new sack.:j Was married 2nd october 2009 to the most wonderful man possible:j

I buy the smart price ones that have not been washed. 5kg of estima. £1 36p. I use them for everything and as there is only two of us a bag lasts around 3-4 weeks. I never have to throw any out as they keep really wellLife is not the way it’s supposed to be. It’s the way it is. The way you cope with it is what makes the difference.0 -
I usually buy whatever's cheapest, based on £/100g. I don't mind if they're not exactly the right spuds for the job - mostly I am mashing them anyway and they all go down the same way. These days a lot of spuds don't tell you the names, they just say they're whites or reds.
I always use up all the spuds I buy, but I love spuds so am quite happy eating just a plate of mash with gravy.
You shouldn't throw any away. Tonight I made bangers and mash - I used three different types of spuds to use them up. One was a baking spud from Aldi; some were loose/dirty small potatoes that had started to sprout; the rest were some small round newish ones. Use up what you have before you buy new or the temptation's there to use the nice newer ones and the older ones just get more rotten until you throw them out.0 -
Hi
Thanks all. Pastures New - that's exactly my problem, I just add the potatoes to my online shop and then use the new ones and throw the old ones away. My garage is a long way from the house so I am not sure whether it is worth getting a huge bag (actually, I could and just go and replenish a smaller bag indoors every few days ...)
Thank you for not being mean to me. I'm not really a 'housey' type person and have always worked but now changed circumstances (at home with new baby for half the week) means that I need to economise and not stupidly throw away food!
I love reading this forum. It's very informative for me :-)
Thanks again all!0 -
Roosters potatoes are very nice and are £1.47 for a 2kg pack, but somestimes are on offer for £1, they are well lush mashed and keep as well! We never through any out as since we've been buying them, we eat more potatoes now and actually finish a bag!0

Our garage is not on the property and we have to walk to it. We bought a hand shopping basket from Aldi (like the ones you use in any supermarket) for a couple of quid and find it easier to bring the spuds in this way, we keep it lined with paper so it doubles up as storage under the stairs where we keep em when they are in the house as its cool and dark.:j Was married 2nd october 2009 to the most wonderful man possible:j
