I have some experience of this as a primary school teacher working in three different schools in the last four years. Read Write Inc is recommended for whole school implementation and usually lasts for a couple of years for each child, if the child starts in reception and makes average progress. I'm not really sure what you'd like to know - can you clarify?

My children's school has gone over to read write inc after my eldest had already been through reception, I hate it for my youngest, it does not engage him at all.
I much preferred the letters and sounds approach that was used before, I know there is no provision for writing in letters and sounds but that is easily solved.
must add that my eldest (yr 3) does not like the approach and he was top of the class before this was introduced 2 yrs ago, he much preferred and thrived on letters and sounds.'we don't stop playing because we get old, we get old because we stop playing'0 -

Well my DD (6) is in year 2, and their year are being "guinea pigs" in the possible implementation, and I have heard some quite mixed reviews-recently, only bad!
As I only have one child, I have nothing to compare Read Write Inc to........0 -
Sorry, only just caught up with you again.
I know that several primary schools local to me think a lot of Read Write Inc.
Certainly there seems to be nothing intrinsically bad about it from what I have observed.
The only problem to me is that I don't believe any system is the best for all children...the key is to choose a system which works for most of the children in the school, and be flexible about finding other ways of teaching the small group of children who perhaps find that this doesn't suit their learning style.
I'm afraid this is probably not a very helpful answer to your question.
On the other hand, the issue to me is not so much what system is used in a school for teaching reading and writing as how it is implemented. If you trust your child's school and your child's teachers, don't worry - they can use whatever system and make it work.

After three and a half years of using this synthetic phonics scheme in my classroom I have nothing but positive things to say about it. Every single child has made considerable progress with reading and writing and it has raised the standards in my challenging inner city school.
From a teacher's point of view, if followed correctly, this beats jolly phonics and suchlike by a mile!
Also, regarding Letters and Sounds, RWI is designed to work in conjunction with this. THe only significant difference is the order in which sounds are introduced. Ruth Miskin, the lady behind RWI also put together Letters and Sounds.
I couldn't praise the scheme enough! (The kids absolutely love it too!)0
