electricity usage of sky+ box does this sound right?

Ok my average usage when using no electric heating is 9 units a day.

Since I have turned my sky+ box off at the socket I am now using 6 units a day. When it was on, it was not fully turned on it was in standby for the vast majority of the time. So hdd was powered down.

So if I have worked this out correctly then my sky+ box in standby is using approx 125 watts.

Does this sound about right?

According to some websites I looked at it should be nearer 19 watts in standby and still only 37 watts when in use.

If I am correct and its too high does this suggest a possible faulty meter? Or could a faulty sky+ box make it use more power?

No way can it use 125 Watts - it would melt!

19W or 11w on standby is correct for mine.

The way to check is get a cheap plug in power monitor(£7 in Lidl) and you can measure the cunsumption of any appliance.

ok so what would you say is the reason for the 3kw per day reading? and especially after I get this device it confirms the usage is lower.

Have you really ONLY turned the Sky box off and changed nothing else? What prompted the Sky box going off? If it was a higher than-you-would-like bill, I'd suggest subconsciously you are being more careful with other items? Or perhaps you are at home less now Xmas/ New Year/ the snow is over?

I would guess that your other usage varies from day to day, and unless you have comparative readings over many weeks then other variables are accounting for most of that 3Kwh difference.

correct. The 9 units a day is fairly steady I have very low variances to usage so this is a reply to the other poster who asked about viariances as well.

I very regurly check my usage, there has been at times occasional 8 units used but I have never had as low as 6 units before.

My typical devices are desktop pc, laptop, fridge (all on all day)
cooker used once per day (one hot meal a day)
toaster used once or twice per day
kettle used dozen or so times a day, this one probably varies but I wouldnt say a big deal as my daily routine doesnt change much. (housebound).

The 9 units a day is measured over half a year now probably even a bit longer, I measured the 6 units a day over a 5 day period (29 units in 5 days, was 18 units at end of day 3), turned sky+ box back on yesterday and today 9 units again.

So the only variables are maybe an hour or 2 time shift of when I take readings as not exact same time every day, so maybe 22 to 26 hour period range for day and kettle usage.

My average usage went up in late dec and early jan when I was using my electrical heater to 11 units, I then took more readings after I stopped using the heater and was back to 9 units.

The very short answer is no other devices changed to normal usage.

It is simply conjecture how you are consuming electricity and the monitor you purchase will show you the consumption of the various appliances.

However a Sky+ box designed to use 19 Watts cannot devlop a fault that will mean it is dissipating an additional 125watts - well not for more than a few minutes until it burnt out.!!!

is it possible my meter is faulty tho?

because from what you saying it sounds like the plugin meter is just going to confirm the 3 units a day is not accurate.

To clarify; You do mean your electricity meter and not a monitoring device, Owl, Electrisave etc.?
