Which variety of potatoes do YOU grow?

I grew Marfona last year (in bags as I only have a small garden). They grew very easily and not a bad crop. This year I really want some nice small new potatoes. I love the thought of small new potatoes with butter along side my salad!
So, which potatoes have you found best to grow (and any suggestions of which ones I should give a try)?

Pink Apple Fir - wonderful with salad, bit knobbly but the taste......
Maris Piper & rooster & whatever I have kicking about from last year's crop.
Grew some funny blue/black potatoes last year - they do look horrid, but they taste lovely - don't know their name though.0 -
Grew 3 different types in sacks last year ....best yield by far were Charlotte, and very good flavour too.0

Charlotte and Nadine are both superb second-early potatoes and as they're waxy then are great as salad potatoes later in the season. I've tried them both and think that Charlotte just have the edge because the tubers are so attractive to look at.
For really early potatoes International Kidney (aka Jersey Royals) have the best flavour imho, but Rocket give an earler crop.
Pink Fir Apple are the tastiest main crop salad spud but a b***er to clean. Ratte is almost as good, but with smooth tubers.
For main crop I grow Desiree because I like big redskins and they're a good all purpose spud. Cara and Picasso are good all rounders too.Val.0 -
Rather a lot of different varieties as we have a Potato Day nearby with about 50 choices. This means I can grow very small quantiies of lots of sorts. i do not like floury potatoes, which affects my choice.
Rocket is my basic very early potato and follow it with Red Duke of York, which has a huge following locally.
My standards are Cara in case of drought and Desiree, though others prefer Rooster.
I always try to grow a few Arran Victory - purple skins and make lovely roasters at this time of year.
Highland Burgundy has red flash and is very tasty. I also like salad potatoes so grow Charlotte, Kestrel and PFA.
In the past I have grown snowdrop/Witchill which tastes lovely.
For fun, Shetland Black and Fortyfold. Like the latter - has an interesting taste but can be a b for blight. If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing0 -
Charlotte for lovely new potatoes. Last year I grew kestrel for the first time and had a great crop, lots of big ones though, not what you are after.
Pink fir apple I didn't taste the difference and lost so much of the (small) crop peeling them I didn't grow them again.Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.0 -
I grew Charlotte and Vivaldi last season. Will definately grow the Vivaldi again as the taste was superb. Might try them with Nadine or Kestrel this year.Making magic with fabricLight travels faster than sound. This is why some people appear bright until you hear them speak.0

I suggest you get this months Gardeners World magazine (or at least read it in WH Smiths) as it has potato varieties on test with ratings on yield and taste0

I'm having a go at Rocket for the 1st early which are round-ish. I've not tried these before. I'm not sure how good they are against blight.
And oval-ish Desiree for maincrop because I like the waxyiness and the pinky red skin.
I've picked those and shied away from Pink fir apple because I don't like to spend time peeling knobbly spuds.:rotfl:No longer half of Optimisticpair

You don't peel Pink Apple Fir - you scrub them with a long bristled brush.
If you're growing organically you don't need to peel any tattie, just remove the blemishes & scrub.0 -
I have gone for Charlotte potatoes and Pentland Javelin potatoes. It's my first go at growing spuds so I'm pleased to see so many people saying Charlottes are good!Comp wins 2014: £30 Gu Pud Vouchers0
