CIS are good, RAC are a (Screen)broker and will quote you with whoever is the cheapest.

You can normally get cash back with both of them

So the RAC may recommend some obscure company?

I do try to read as much of the policy documents as possible, but the problem is usually trying to identify what isn't covered as much as what is.

I have about 3 weeks to sort out insurance so I will get some quote and will probably have more questions once I have narrowed it down, although at the moment it is between the 3 companies if they are all good.

RAC is owned by Aviva, so it is pretty likely you will end up being recommended a policy underwritten by them!

In any case, beware some strange features of the RAC policy:

    1) DOC cover is only granted to the main driver (irrespective of whether or not that is the policyholder)

    2) Only the main driver is awarded any NCD (again, irrespective of whether or not that is the policyholder)

    3) Likewise, they will only accept the main drivers NCD (also irrespective of whether or not the main driver is the policyholder)

    4) Unlike most policies, the car must have a valid MOT (if applicable)

After reading the reviews linked to my Quentin in another topic, I still don't know who to go with.

Very few of the companies reviews had more than 2 stars and those that did either didn't have enough reviews to make an informed decision, or none of the reviewers reported actually making claims.

The best I seem to have come up with so far is NFU and, although I haven't got a quote yet, I would expect them to be more expensive.

    Any thoughts?

Got a quote from NFU this morning and it was almost 60% more expensive than any of the other quotes I've had.

how very strange, certainly open to manipulation by some

The most up to date Auto Express insurance survey that I can quote is from 2007. NFU came 1st out of 50 insurance providers & Norwich Union(Aviva) came 50th. Iirc customers rated each company for cost, customer service & claims handling.

    Thanks.

Do you have a link to the Auto Express insurance survey?

I have been checking the New Car Replacement of a few policies as my car is only 5 months only and was bought pre-registered.

Most of them only provide the cover if you are the first registered owner so don't apply to me.

However Aviva will cover the second registered owner if the first owner was a member of the motor trade so I qualify.

Is this a good enough reason to renew with Aviva?

On another note, I read all Martin's tips including getting a new quote from your current insurer rather than renewinig. I just tried to do this online with Aviva, but as soon as I put in the reg number it said I already had a policy with them and wouldn't provide a quote.

    Any way round this?
