    lbs and oz's for most things except for recipes that are written in cups as I find that sometimes conversions don't work so well

    Not bothered whether it's in lbs oz or g/kg, but much prefer mass units to volume -although I have a set of US cup measures, do they mean tightly packed? loosely packed? heaped cup? level cup??

    Is there a standard cup size now? and if so where do I get one?

    Oh yes - it would be a nightmare it there wasn't!

    1cup = 250ml
    1tablespoon = 15ml
    1teaspoon = 5ml

    You can get cup measures at most retailers... I think I got my first set in Wilkies... my DM gave me a lovely stainless steel set for Christmas.

    Perhaps travel cannot prevent bigotry. But by demonstrating that all people cry, laugh, eat, worry and die, it introduces the idea that if we try to understand each other, we may even become friends.

    I have always used lbs and oz, but I can do metric no probs, I just use whatever is in the recipe

    My mother has a set of cup measures. Which she bought from Lakeland,

    I prefer imperial measures but I can happily work in metric and US cups too:)

    I do like to use imperial measures for recipes that are both traditional and British. I just feel that because they were devised in imperial measures they should stay that way.
  • I always use metric measurements, as base 10 units are far easier to scale than Imperial measures :D

    Level - not heaped - unless it says heaped. Cups are funny - Apparently it depends if you put the cup measure in the flour, or pour the flour in - as you will get different amounts doing either way. I don't over analyse and it usually works but I don't use cup measurements specifically a lot. If you pour it in, it will be more tightly packed than putting the cup in the flour - I think?

    Always pounds and ounces. All the newer cookbooks seem to have g/kg measurements only which drives me mad :mad: I get terribly confused and it takes me far longer.

    Absolutely hate cups, I actually avoid recipes that use cups. So most US recipes, then. I have a set, but I just don't get on with using them.

    Suppose I'm just a bit too old school for my own good.

    I like my recipes to be in Lbs & Ozs, and my oven temps to be in Gas Marks. I don't often use scales though, I can usually measure by eye.

    I used to hate cups until i got a nice SS set and now i much prefer it. You do have to rember to level off flour with the back of a knife. I find myself converting ml recipes to cups. I also think its easier dbl or halve a recipe if its in cups, less maths!
