Sounds like your kids need a good clip around the ear, and early bed times - so they can get up early enough for the paper round they're going to be doing to work off the debt!

You must teach them the value of money while they're young. Don't let them get in to the buy now, pay later mentality. You HAVE to be cruel to be kind to them. I'm sure they will thank you later on in life :)

Good luck, and sheeze, what a bill!

Something else that confuses me is that different countries pages let you join at different ages

That will be because of the different laws in those countries.

Yeah but I am not talking about 16 or 18. I mean here it is 11 in the USA it is 13 what laws would they relate to?? Any one got any clues? Perhaps this could be a focus of an argument?

I believe it's the age of responsibility, i.e. you know what you're doing is wrong (etc). Certainly 13 rings a bell for the States, but I always thought it was 10 here.

I sympathise with you. when I was younger, we had a similar problem. the matter went to court and BT backed down. but those were the days when the market was not privatised and BT were the only company and could afford to lose a few hundred pounds here and there.

    A few tips:
    1. If you have cordless phones, some have a call bar specific to the phone. You can set to bar premium rate numbers being dialled from that handset.

    2. Some corded phones have a physical key to unlock the phone. My aunt had one of these in Tanzania, when she couldn't trust the housegirl not to misuse the phone.

    3. Monthly spending limit from your telephone provider. Ask them to set up an e-mail alert when your bill reaches that limit.

    4. Already mentioned, but placing a bar on the actual line itself. This does have the disadvantage of preventing any and all premium rate calls on the line, even genuine ones. A better idea may be to use a selective barring service. Here, you enter a pin and can change the bar settings - just make the pin hard to guess. There are 9999 possibilities (actually less than that as they automatically block easy to guess number patterns).

    5. Set up online account management, and check it every day just as you would your bank accounts. Switch to a telephone provider that provides realtime call records. You can check when a call was made as quickly as 5 minutes after it's finished.

    6. Contact ICSTIS who can tel you which company a particular premium rate number refers to.

    Hope this helps.

    cheers and take care.

    Hussein.
