Being forced to stay in work when ill

they haven't done anything illegal ...you werent forced to stay they just let you stay because you didnt stand up for yourself .. it standard practise to try to prevent those who just wanna go out and get drunk or who are bored to say things wait and see how you feel etc but if your generally ill you would have told them you were going
you attend work of your own free will and unless they hand cuff you to the till then they didnt deny you the oppurtunity to leave they just used you because you allowed them too

You're not allowed drinks on the checkouts? Not even water? Surely that's illegally if you are being refused a drink of water. I used to work on checkouts at Asda and they allowed me to take water to the checkouts as long as it was hidden.
If I were you I would talk to HR about it.

I understand what everybody has said, I agree that I should have been more assertive and told them I was leaving, but the question I originally asked still remains...is it legal to be kept in work against my own will, when feeling unable to work?
Nomatter what is said, I was denied the opportunity to leave, multiple times, by the manager.
I'm lucky I work in the public sector now & they treat people decently.
But I've worked for crappy places who just want their pound of flesh from you:mad:
I don't know if its legal, but if it happens again phrase it in such a way as you're not asking, but telling, seems you have to with them:mad:
Take no notice of the less than polite responses they've obviously never worked for crappy employers yet.0 -
Your employer has a duty of care under Health and Safety legislation. Perhaps you might argue that that was ignored.Opinion, advice and information are different things. Don't be surprised if you receive all 3 in response.0

Whats the point. Either go home or stay. Dont moan because you 'chose' to stay.

I think you need to ask for a health and safety meeting to raise the issue of being presurized to stay at work while sick.
Leave it to management to advise on policy and take any action required.
