Have you thought about going by train to Holyhead and as a foot passenger from there to Dublin?
National Rail Enquiries show a single fare of £30.50 (£61.00 return) from London to Dublin Ferryport including ferry. I imagine it would be a simple matter to pick up a hire car at the FerryPort.
I don't know what part of the country you are starting from, but I just checked and that exact same fare is also available from Dover, Newcastle and Plymouth. Check from your departure station.0 -
I go to Dublin quite a bit as we have family in Carlow and I have a few mates who live in Dublin.
My flights return are rarely more than £25.00 / £35.00 and If I go visiting the relatives in down in Carlow I usually rent a car for about £80.00 / £100.00 for the weekend.
All in all that makes it about £135.00 for the flights return and the car. Not bad value.
If I stay in Dublin I take the bus 6Eu from the airport. Bargain!

I went to Ireland this month and I used Imagine Ireland and they combined the price of the ferry crossing and the price of the cottage together, and the price of the ferry worked out cheaper doing in that way (it gave you a breakdown of costs) than if I had booked independetely.
I must say, you'd love Ireland, I sure did
