old post office savings account

I Have never done anything about it so I still have £1- deposited in a post office savings ac by my nan, has been sat there for the last 41 years, on one of those famous old books,
I seem to remember a few years ago seeing it on the news that these accounts were being disolved,
Whats the procedure to get my £1- out or start to use the account'
I guess my pound is probably now over a fiver now.
Any help and info appreciated.

goodybags, my OH had a lot of the old postoffice saving stamps, the ones in the green card. They were all bought 30 or so years ago. They are the ones that when purchased offer a gauranted value after 3 or more years i.e one bought for £5 would be worth £5.68 after 3 years.
We rang the PO and the kind lady on the end of the phone asked for the details off of the cards and to our suprise all of the cards had continued to accrue interest and they were worth over £250 in total.
We have decided to just put them back in the draw and leave them.

I too have an account that was set up for me as a child aprox 30 years ago. Can anyone suggest how I can go about finding out about the account and getting my money out? I haven't got the post office book.

Hi everyone,

We found 2 old post office books when my Nan died. We asked in our local post office and they gave us 2 addressed envelopes and told them to send them in with a covering letter. It took a few weeks, but my Mum got 2 cheques, including the interest - which amounted to about £10 in all!
I even asked if they could return the books to us as they were so old they would be nice to keep. They did - after stamping 'cancelled' on the pages, of course.

I've also got a post office account (about 30 yrs old), I sent the book off a few years ago and got quite a bit of interest.

I need to dig it out again and send it off for the interest to be added. I think I have about £100 plus any recent interest, I'm not sure whether to close it or just leave the money there. I suppose I ought to find out the interest rate!

I think I read in this weeks email that the government were going to start pooling old savings accounts and using the money?? Don't know if this would be included?? Better find out really!! Another job to do, already sorted my car insurance this week and my nana's virgin tv bill!!:D
