Tiles being removed and going back to breezeblock.

Hello,am currently removing tiles from bathroom walls which were halfway up and jutted out about 2.5 inches from wall above. The walls are back to breezeblock where I have removed tiles,as think tiles were put on concrete, hence taking large chunks of wall down???
Can I plasterboard the lower walls and tile straight onto plasterboard? If yes is a normal tile adhesive ok?Otherwise what is the best and cheapest way of making the walls sound ready for tiling, thank you.

cover the whole wall in PB is probably the best way. and cheapest.
aquapanel maybe the best idea for the bathroom. more expensive but very waterproof.
if the wall is half straight then you could actually tile direct onto the breeze blocks.
(you may have trouble getting the tiles perfectly level though).
all depends on the final finish you want?
perfect or so so?Get some gorm.0 -
Thank you.Would I use a concrete based adhesive if I was putting tiles straight onto breezeblock?
My walls are half straight so I can,t put plasterboard all the way up,thank you.0 -
What does half straight mean? They can't be that far out (or can they ?).
You prolly can PB all the way up. Use Drywall Adhesive (not tile adhesive) by the dot & dab method. Varying the amount of addy in each "blob" from top to bottom should mean you can get a vertical wall again. Use a lot of it - don't skimp. You'll be needing to use enough such that the p'board can't flex for when you tile. Make sure edges are fully supported. Don't D&D aquapanel though. Use p'board and tank it in the shower area.
You certainly should NOT be using tile addy to level your wall. If its that bad get a spread in and get it plastered then tile onto that.
Yes you can tile direct onto p'board. Weight limit per m2 on p'board is 32 kg - lots of scope. On skim over bonding or skim over drywall weight limit drops to iro 20kg/m2.
What do you mean by "normal" tile adhesive?

Yes walls are that far out however if I apply P.B. to lower walls where I have had to bolster the tiles off which took it back to breezeblock then the whole wall will probably be level. Was not sure whether that was a feasible thing to do that,s all.
By normal tile adhesive I meant as opposed to concrete based ones.I am trying to do the bathroom myself so hoping not to have to get anyone in to plaster walls if I can help it.If I am sounding non techy it,s because I am,I am not trying to bodge job the bathroom I just want to learn to do as much as I possibly can.Thank you.0 -
How far out is it top to bottom? Post a pic here or host it somewhere else and post the link here. Lets have a boo at it!
OK still don't entirely understand what you mean by "normal" tile addy. I'm going to guess that you mean tubbed stuff. Whether you can use this or you need to use bagged entirely depends on the substrate and the tiles you are planning to put up.
Substrate we are talking about. What size tiles are you planning and are they ceramic, porc or natural stone?

I have no idea how to post a picture sorry.
It,s difficult to explain what my bathroom looks like so you understand.
Bathroom very small.Wall were half tiled all way round and a bit further up around bath.
The tiles were small but it was as though the walls had been built out in width just for the tiles,so the walls above were about 2-3 inches back.Actually even though the amount of rubble is incredible so far now I am looking at it again there is not a lot of difference to where I have hacked off the tiles to the wall up above, problem is though the lower wall is breezeblock with the upper wall being plastered,I am trying to think how to tie the walls in so I can tile. One of the main reasons of removing the tiles albeit it,s turned into a big job is because space is so tight,as in door being able to shut, etc!!
Not sure if I have made that any clearer but thanks for trying to help.0
