M&S going OS?

Marks and Spencer is to sell pork collar from Monday as shoppers are inspired by celebrity chefs including Jamie Oliver to make use of cheaper cuts of meat during the recession.

See article in Sunday Telegraph for full details.

Being a veggie I can't comment on the price (£5.99 per kilo) but hopefully a regular on this board will be able to give an insight as to how it compare to other shops.

  • I'd never heard of this cut but a quick google tells me that it's suitable for casseroles and stews as it is a tougher cut.

Does anyone already use pork collar?
  • Not sure about the price either.

Bets are the local butcher is bother cheaper and better tasting

I buy pork collar from Farm Foods. I pay around £6 but not sure if that is 1 or 2 KG - but it is a nice big piece of meat. I cook mine in the slow cooker and it is lovely and tender.

ETA - I have been to Farm Foods tonight and bought a pork collar. It cost £5.95 for 2kg so half the price of M&S.
  • :rotfl:Definitely NOT OS !! I can get it cheaper at my local butcher
Blessed are the cracked for they are the ones that let in the light

    Not Buying it 2015!
  • HI thats expensive and not suprising, the price of 'cheap cuts' has gone through the roof in supermarkets, breast of lamb, ham shanks, and belly pork etc, i go to a small local butcher who gets me anything even a pigs head!!!! i get a lot at a time and freeze it, or even a local chinese supermarket has some interesting things tucked away if you have a good look.;)
It's all staring us in the face...we just can't see it!!!

Slightly OT but the cheap cuts of beef tends to be brisket and Rand, i never buy it since it always looks too tough and fatty. Anyone have any comments re Brisket/Rand?

Yes, I remember when lamb shanks were used by a chef (Jamie?) and he said they were cheap and suddenly they were in the supermarkets in their *Finest* section as a *cheffy* ingredient and really expensive!

I've got no experience with Rand. Is that just another name for brisket?

I cooked a rolled brisket last week. It needs long, slow cooking, so after browning it, I cooked it in my slow cooker.
Hubby said the meat was tender (I don't eat meat).
We kept some for slicing for sandwiches, but because it's a rolled joint, we did have to pick some fatty bits from the slices.
But hubby said, apart from that, it was nice. Tasted like other beef joints.

I would like cheap cuts to stay cheap please. Can chefs please stop trying to sell offal and belly pork and brisket and oxtail?

My thoughts exactly! I have always used cheap cuts as they are tasty.....and of course economical. It is so frustrating to see their price rising due to the trend factor. On a positive note maybe the price of fillet steak will come down;)
