Soundproofing?

Anyone know the quickest, cheapest (as I want to just go out and get it done straight away myself) way to soundproof walls?

My neighbours toddler wakes me and my son every morning (anytime from 4am) crying and the wall between my bedroom and the neighbours (which they have the toddler in) seems to be rather thin going by the noise! And we get it at night too!Lazy !!!!s don't get out to see to the child when it cries though and all you can hear is the occasional 'what are you crying for?'

My son is severely autistic and it's been driving him nuts for a while now and he's now self harming at an alarming rate due to it.With them now due their third child at any moment I'm about to lose the plot (and have shouted through the wall at them this morning as I'm so fed up of the lazy idiots:o)

So I really need to be able to find the quickest easiest way to soundproof my room to an extent to make it more bareable for my son (who can even hear it in his room).I will get the whole house done as soon as I can but was wondering if anybody knows of a 'quick fix' to just dim it for the time being?

i doubt there is any cheap and quick fixes.
you need to build a stud frame on the wall, and fill it with (rockwool?) insulation.
    then PB over the top.
    Get some gorm.

A musician friend of mine (drummer!) uses cardboard egg boxes to soundproof his wall and to appease his neighbours. You will need a lot, and I'm not sure how he fixes them to his wall but if you can get hold of any, they are at least a quick, cheap fix for now. As your son is autistic, it may be worth seeing if you are able to apply for a grant for the work, ask the local council. Would your son wear earplugs at night? And maybe see the noise abatement people at the council, they may be able to have a word with your neighbours. Good luck!

I have a similar problem but its neighbours snoring (I could cheerfully kill him) a false wall and insulation was the only solution I came up with but the hastle with relocating radiators and so forth put me off. Foam ear plugs I use use when on the bike, work very well though.

build stud frame work against the wall either use kingspan or sheet polystyren quite cheap , get plaster boared then fix to stud work = false wall .

done this with few restruants where working faciltys was close to dinning faciltys and worked very well .

use 3x2 cls and the foam or kingspan is 2inch thick so very solid no fled in platerboared etc .

I can get the house done either myself or through occupational therapy but it will take time.Thing is I need to lessen the time as much as possible as he's putting his head through doors, headbutting solid walls and hitting his ears so hard they turn black :(

Earplugs are a no go as he hs ticklish ears (bloomin typical that!)

As for noise abatement apparently a crying child is fine and not something to be complained about.Which is understandable I guess but if the lazy idiots got out to see to the kid he wouldn't be crying so much:mad:

Thanks for all the advice so far everyone

  • What about using soundboard instead of normal plasterboard? I think normally they would double board it for the best results..

I really feel for you and would be concerned if your son is suffering because of this :(
I have no advise at all regarding soundproofing but it is a good idea that i never thought about.
We are currently in a top floor flat and i can hear my neighbours on the loo :)

Do you talk to the neighbours? I would maybe have a word and mention it to them (some may be offended). I would certainly try and sort something out if my child was causing another child problems. They could maybe swap rooms with him if his that bad or at least start to tend him more often when he is having disturbed sleep x

there are all sort of products that would give better results.
but cost and size dictate a sensible cost/benefit solution.
i could make a flat virtually silent. but would you be prepared to loose 4/6/12 inches off each wall?
