I'm wondering if the Ultimate version is overkill for me though. Would Home Premium use less RAM and be a bit faster?

they are basically identical operating systems under the hood but ultimate has extra bells and whistles 'unlocked' so you can actually use the system more flexiably0

If you bought ultimate I guess that's what you're stuck with, the "which version" decision is one to make before purchase

Given the money, I would have had ultimate (not that I value the extras in any way, I do use the XP vm which isn't available in home though), but the S4S £38 pro upgrade was too good to not take, so MS finally got my money for the 1st time since...well, you don't want to know
