Hilarious Cake mix from M&S

I would buy them as I don't bake so will have no use wasting a packet of flour even Value stuff when wanting the one off of Pancakes...
Do you never use flour for anything ever? A packet of flour will cost pennies (possibly even less than a packet batter mix) and will last for an age.
What do you do when you want to make pies, cakes or biscuits? Puddings, dumplings or sauces? Pizza? Yorkshire puds?
What do you eat?"One day I realised that when you are lying in your grave, it's no good saying, "I was too shy, too frightened."
Because by then you've blown your chances. That's it."0 -
C'mon though, be fair! It's not just a rip-off set of ingredients, it's an M&S rip-off set of ingredients! If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.0

My late MIL used all the mixes for pancakes, yorkshire puds, trifle etc etc. When we cleared her kitchen out a few weeks ago DH brought all the packets & tins home. I was horrified by the pancake batter mix (containing flour & skimmed milk powder) but put it in the cupboard for emergencies. My DD asked me the other day how many pancakes I'd got out of the mix, as I'd just made them for breakfast, and I had to reply saying that I didn't know as I couldn't bring myself to use it!
I can, however, see that they would be useful for a single person who doesn't bake many other things. MIL used them when she had 3 kids & a DH at home lol!0 -

I must admit to being surprised at work a couple of weeks ago when someone said they used a packet of white sauce mix for something as it's such a simple thing to make from scratch (in my opinion!)
yes - in your opinion . It is easy when you know howBut if like me you weren't taught to cook stuff like that as a child - it's quite daunting to make. Plus white sauce is renowned for coming out lumpy. Now I have made it, I agree how easy it is , but would have bought it as I genuinely wouldn't have known how easy it was to make, and how little ingredients it took
People buy this stuff because they don't know any better.A little nonsense now and then is relished by the wisest men

My husband passed through M&S food store on his way out of the train station on Friday night. He saw a victoria sponge cake kit and thought it would be a lovely thing to make with the children.
He has once in 6 years made some biscuits with them, and was excited about doing something again.
He came home all proud and showed me this expensive kit.
Ingredients:
Flour
Sugar
Jam
Icing
Just Add:
Eggs,
Butter
Milk
I pointed it out to my husband, we have flour and sugar and jam at home, bless him he did feel had.
He thought everything would be in a packet and he would get the kids to stir and hey presto!
But I'm not complaining, he is cooking with the kids, and giving me some time to iron, but I thought you would have a chuckle about how non MSE it is!
Aww. Bless. Well, he sounds a great husband and Dad, and he's made a great start to becoming MSE:T0 -

Anyone have any ideas? If I was making a cottage pie I wouldn't be adding much more than a stock cube and a bit of salt and pepper.
On that particular site, that brand of Cottage Pie Mix costs £1.69  - for what is basically a glorified pack of 'tomato and onion flavoured gravy' mix.
Mind you it is a web-site that supplies 'British Products' for people living abroad - think I'd have to be really desperate for a familiar product to pay that.0 -
Bless him - At least he tried - a lot of men wouldn'tBlessed are the cracked for they are the ones that let in the light

I even make lumpy instant Bisto gravy!
Some of us are just naturally crap cooks!
We're having packet sliced beef with our roast tonight cos I won't risk spending pounds on a joint that tastes like chewy shoe leather
I wish I liked cooking - I really hate it!
It's packets all the way for me .... :TBest wins: ITV Real Deal CASH,Trip to Lapland.0 -
The thing about the white sauce reminds me of when I first started uni, and I was going to make a lasagne for my housemates. I popped to the shop with my mate to get the stuff and she headed immediately to the jars and sauces aisle up until that point I had NO IDEA that they sold white sauce in jars - what a sheltered life I had led :rotfl:
I had always made it from scratch as it's so simple, obviously I knew you could buy readymeals but for some reason it hadn't crossed my mind that you could get in in jars!

Sometimes I wish I could use packet mixes more but DD1 is a coeliac so most of my cooking has to be from scratch except for Mr A's lasagne white sauce which is gluten free and the value. Batter mixes for the odd occasion that we have yorkies..... then I have to provide gluten free ones too!!Sealed Pot Challenge - No 1520Want to be debt clear by June 2012:j0
