I have to share this with you all, I thought you might have a chuckle!
My husband passed through M&S food store on his way out of the train station on Friday night. He saw a victoria sponge cake kit and thought it would be a lovely thing to make with the children.
He has once in 6 years made some biscuits with them, and was excited about doing something again.
He came home all proud and showed me this expensive kit.
Ingredients:
Flour
Sugar
Jam
Icing
Just Add:
Eggs,
Butter
Milk
I pointed it out to my husband, we have flour and sugar and jam at home, bless him he did feel had.
He thought everything would be in a packet and he would get the kids to stir and hey presto!
But I'm not complaining, he is cooking with the kids, and giving me some time to iron, but I thought you would have a chuckle about how non MSE it is!

Oh bless, that did make me giggle! Good old M&S.
Your husband sounds like a sweetie.0 -
It's like packets of pancake/batter mix that say "just add eggs and water" - ie. they contain flour and powdered milk. Seriously - why would anyone go out and by that?"One day I realised that when you are lying in your grave, it's no good saying, "I was too shy, too frightened."
Because by then you've blown your chances. That's it."0 -
bless hubby for wanting to bake with the kids :T
my OH has an addiciton to those ready made tubs of pancake mix  I have about 3 or 4 in the cupbaord from when he goes shopping and despite having all ingredients in the cupbaord for pancakes, he is adamant its easier (too lazy to measure it out) and taste better to use ready made *insert rolling eyes smiley lol*2010 resolutions1- get my 5yo DD dry daytime, with enuresis help dry since 12th Jan so far!

So how much do those cost then?
http://www.talkingretail.com/news/industry-announcements/8115-m.html?s-launches-its-first-ever-ingredients-range= I like how it refers to it as 'ingredients' range and it has mixes for this that and the other. I suppose it distinguishes it from 'ready' food, which has been their market previously.
I see the sponge is £2.49"Knowledge is knowing that a tomato is a fruit. Wisdom is not putting it in a fruit salad"

If he wants to do this again, the Tesco value sponge mix is reasonable value at a few pence, and you only need to add one egg and water, the sponge comes out very tasty and you can add what you like to it, and it works as cupcakes too. Definitely quicker and easier than doing it from scratch! I once added mango pulp from a tin in place of the water, then made buttercream mango icing with the same tin of pulp - delish! With a cherry on top of the cupcakes, they went down well at the party I took them to.
I am guessing you could add cocoa or bits of chocolate, other fruit, flavoured essences, colouring etc. For kids, cupcakes are great as they can decorate their own, either with home made icing or a bought icing kit.Trust me - I'm NOT a doctor!0 -
I popped round to my friend's just now and spotted a packet of this cottage pie mix. I didn't have time to look at it but I can't imagine what would be in it! Anyone have any ideas? If I was making a cottage pie I wouldn't be adding much more than a stock cube and a bit of salt and pepper.0

According to the ingredients list on Tesco's site it contains Wheat Flour, Tomato Powder (16%), Flavourings (contains wheat), Dried Onion (9%), Corn Flour, Yeast Extract, Salt, Barley Malt Extract (contains wheat), Garlic Powder, Thyme, Vegetable Oil
I must admit to being surprised at work a couple of weeks ago when someone said they used a packet of white sauce mix for something as it's such a simple thing to make from scratch (in my opinion!)Grocery challenge - Nov: £52/£100

I would buy them as I don't bake so will have no use wasting a packet of flour even Value stuff when wanting the one off of Pancakes...What Would Bill Buchanan Do?0 -

My mum always used those packet white sauces and my mum in law does too, and I absolutely refuse to eat them because I always think they taste a bit peculiar. White sauce is so easy to make and it's almost as quick to do it from scratch, I can't understand at all why people would bother with packets.0
