dumpy bags!!!

All of you experienced MSE gardeners probably have already though of this but I though it was inspired and bl@@dy brilliant.

I was having a moan at my neighbour about not having time to get the veg beds sorted in time for planting this year (I need OH help and he is stupidly busy at the moment with work and the extension, so I can't moan really) and he mentioned about someone using dumpy bags.....

All they did was fork over the bottom of the bag before filling it about two thirds with topsoil, pack it down a bit, a few more fork holes in the sides near the bottom and plant!

I think this is a brilliant idea and I shall be using some this year as I really need to get veg growing and this method takes the pressure off getting the wooden raised beds sorted. I can now do the wooden beds in my own time whilst growing veg!

I will post some picks when I get round to setting it all up!

dumpy bags are usually bags that builder merchants deliver sand and gravel etc in, they are about 3/4 foot long on each side and are made so they are cube shaped

They hold about 1t of whatever you fill them with!!!

I had one blown into my driveway a few years ago, no idea where it came from.
I use it as an overflow composter / leaf mould maker over winter then tip out the contents
onto the garden as a mulch in spring.

No reason why they cant be used for all sorts of veg, in fact i recall seeing a group on gardeners world last year growing veg in a large open space exclusively using these builders bags,.

thats the one..... just imagine crops growing in it!

They are made of plastic but loosely woven and they are very strong.

zazan.... thats probably what my neighbour was talking about!

I think its worth a go, very MSE as these dumpy bags just get binned if the handles go as they are no use to the merchant then.....

Off to the builders merchant in the morning scrounging dumpy bags!!

  • Dumpy bags used to be returned to the builders merchants and had a £15 deposit on them (depending on the merchant) and then they we reused. They are now single use only so are no longer required to be returned to the builders merchants. Doubtful you will find any there.

You could however ask a builder as they just tend to skip them now or indeed anyone who is having an extension.

    What a great idea!

You could also try freecycle, I often see them requested and offered on our group.

Also look out locally for anyone having building materials delivered to their house and ask if you could have the bags when they are empty.
