Leopard is the operating system; the other things you mention are pieces of software.
To find out what operating system the mac mini is running click on the Apple icon at the far left hand end of top menu bar. Select "About This Mac".
A pop-up box will appear. At the top of that box it should say something like;
Mac OS X
Version 10.5.7
If it says 10.5.Anything then it is running Leopard.
If it says 10.6.Anything then it is running Snow Leopard.
Leopard and Snow Leopard are different versions; Snow Leopard is newer.
You can find a handy list of versions at Wikipedia here;

If you are that lost then perhaps your friend should find an alternative agent!
What you need to list is operating system and processor. On the menu bar choose the apple menu on the lhs and look at the About This Mac result. That'll list OS version (10.5. is Leopard, 10.6. is Snow Leopard, 10.4. is Tiger).
Click the More Info... button for more info in the System Profiler.
(Why has it only Safari 3 - even G4 machines can run Safari 4.)0 -

thanks for that so mine has 10.5.4 so it must be running leopard then. the safari browser is version 3 it says i can get free upgrade to version but when i tried to install version 4 it says i must have 10.5.8 so does that mean i wont be able to upgrade to safari version 4 now0 -

Wouldn't have thoughts so, no; I'm running 10.5.7 and Safari 4.0.3.
To see what updates are available, for all software and not just Safari, click on that Apple again and select "Software Update ...". That'll scan the machine and tell you what is out there.

Definitely not from a dubious source. it was given as some kind of government incentive scheme and after the course was completed she was allowed to keep the equipment but she has never used it since and decided to sell it, when i switch it on it says free upgrade to version 4 but then says cant do it when i try to install it.0
