How Many Smoke Alarms?

Just for a bit of fun and discussion: How many smoke alarms do you have in your house?
We have four (one on each floor including the cellar) in our UK house, plus two CO alarms.
We have six in our Spanish house as it is an odd shape, plus one CO alarm. We are about to install a seventh smoke alarm in a passage.
I know somepeople who don't have any, and don't know how they can sleep at night.
But perhaps we are just paranoid?

Imagine someone holding forth on biology whose only knowledge of the subject is the Book of British Birds, and you have a rough idea of what it feels like to read Richard Dawkins on theology: Terry Eagleton

2 in the house
Upstairs/downstair
Wired to mains with battery back up.
One of the most essential things to have in a house!
Lets maybe also include Co2 alarms?!0 -

Good idea! I have mentioned mine in the post above (Did you mean Carbon Monoxide -CO2 is Carbon Dioxide iirc).
Most of ours have ten-year batteries.(AKA HRH_MUngo)

LOL-Yeah, Carbon Monoxide!
We have one of them too!0 -
Never had one, no intention of ever getting one.
If I am not at home, I dont need one and if I am, I would rather go up with the house.0 -
I only live in my UK house for a few months a year, but I like to leave it knowing that the people who live in it all the time are not going to be burnt or suffocated in their beds.(AKA HRH_MUngo)

We have two at the mo, however first thing Im checking when we move into the new house is how many there are and where they are, I think there are 3, on on each landing in each floor.0

We have one upstairs and one downstairs. Just bought a CO alarm too, but want to get a second for upstairs.
I'm anosmic (can't smell) so I really need to get a gas alarm too. I've only found this one: http://www.diytools.co.uk/diy/Main/sp-44-518-50594-gas-detector-for-methane-natural-gas.asp but it seems it's wired to the mains. Is this something that can be done DIY do you think?
//Edit I've just bought it (MSE style - 5% voucher, 5% quidco, plus £4.30 diytools points I had previously accumulated). If I have to get an electrician to fit it then so be it. I should have got one a long time ago, shouldn't delay any longer.0
