no credit cards can be paid off with credit cards, only via a balance transfer, which usually incurrs a fee.

I agree but most rewards based credit cards have the facility to make full/partial payments using debit/switch cards.

Are there any rewards cards that offer such payments using credit cards ? .. there must be some ?

As Williham just said, you cannot make a payment to a credit card using another credit card.

Why on earth do you want to pay credit cards with credit cards!!??

Even if it was acceptable, it would be a flippin dangerous game.

  • You could theoretically do it using credit card cheques but not sure these always count for rewards?

In fact I think they count as cash withdrawals - which are bad!

Its not a case of paying off any old credit card debt with another. Instead, was trying to exercise card stoozing to maximise gains offered from rewards based credit cards. :j

    Example:

For aguments sake, lets assume all the following cards have equal amounts of credit available.

    (1) Cashback credit card offering cashback on all purchase made on it.
    (2) A major store credit card offering say, loyalty points for all purchases made on it.
    (3) Rewards based credit card offering say, air miles on all purchases made on it.

Again for arguments sake, we'll use card (1) for all purchases during the month (food, pertrol, bills, anything) and gaining a percentage as cashback in the process.

At the end of the month you're presented with the statement (along with the usual payment due date). Now, before card (1)'s payment due date, login to card (1)'s online account and make a manual payment for the full amount using credit card (2) as payment method.

Wait a day or two and this payment appears as a purchase transaction on card (2)'s account. With card (1) paid off in full, you can now repeat the paying off process for card (2) using card (3) as payment method.

The (cunning) plan then from all this, is that, from a single purchase transaction made using card (1), you have not only gained cashback but also store loyalty points and airmiles from paying off the previous card's debt in the daisychain.
    :EasterBun
Obviously, for this to work, the whole chain of rewards based credit cards totally relies on the ability for each credit card's debt to be cleared in full. Card repayments use some sort of online account facility with the ability to allow the use an external credit card as method of paying off its debt. Also, no to mention the card holder having the ability to stick to a strict time reigeim for each cards debt repayment in the chain.

Is there any possibilty towards finding suitable rewards/loyalty based credit cards for this to work or am I being unrealistic and naive about how such cards and their policies operate ?

Simply put there are no credit cards out there which allow you to settle a statement with another credit card other than making a balance transfer which will incur a fee

As mentioned above payment to card 1 from card 2 is not possible. The only way to move money from card 2 to card 1 is by BT (if card 1 allows) and this will incur a fee that will outstrip any benefit from rewards. Needless to say your next step then becomes a moot point!

Even if it were possible, it would not appear on card 2 as a purchase transaction (because it isn't a purchase) and hence would not earn card 2's freebies

Yes you are being unrealistic and naive.
