UK Summer holidays 2010 recommendations

I would like some holiday recommendations for this year's summer holidays

Criteria - no budget as such just want some ideas to rule things in/out
UK
2 adults 2 children aged 12 & 9 (girls if that makes any difference)
Prefer cottage rather than caravan
One girl wants watersports nearby other one pony trekking
Live near Edinburgh but don't want a very long drive - say 3 - 4 hours max

We live in Scotland and break up at the beginning of July so can sometimes find cottages etc slightly cheaper

Last couple of years we have been to Northumbria, Nothern France and Anglesey so would like somewhere different
Any suggestions gratefully received:D

I've just had a fab holiday in Ireland which I would recommend and I used Imagine Ireland which included the price of the ferry and the cottage. Depending where abouts in Ireland obviously depends what is around you. I stayed in County Waterford in a town called Dungervan.

How about the lake district, we have been many times and this year we are going to Hawkshead area and are hiring a cottage (me, DH, 4 boys aged 10-15)
There are lots of watersports/hiking/ponytrekking activities in the area and it is near Go Ape - which our kids are keen on trying. Only thing is you can never be sure of the weather, but thats the same everywhere I guess.

This is who we are hiring the cottage with, seem quite reasonable.

why not go further north, we love Sutherland, in particular, Ardgay. there is lots to do and the scenery is out of this world, weather can be great as well.
