Can I find out who insures a property???

Hi, hope someone can help

Does anyone know if it is possible to find out who currently insures a property or has done in the past.

We are trying to find out about insuring a house we want to buy that has been underpinnned in 1991 (is a repo so no info)

Any ideas?

Ask the vendors which I assume is the mortgage company, they would have noted the details of the Insurance policy on their mortgage, it is common practice for the buyers to take over the existing insurance or take out cover with the same insurer who paid the claim (Which is normally the same company). They should therefore have no problem telling you who their Insurers are.

The value of the property should reflect that it has been underpinned as it normally affects the value. Be prepared to pay insurance premiums that are a lot more than you would normally pay and for when you well the house for the underpinning to put most buyers off and affect the value

We have asked and they are supposed to be finding out- although they dont seem in any rush- as it's a repo we only hane 12 of our 28 days left to exchange so time is of the essence-

we know it will cost more and it is a good price for the house in a good area- it's not something we plan to sell for many years- we're not in it to make money but have a nice home.

This underpinning (100%) was done nearly 20 years ago it just seems such a shame to loose it because of this :(
  • This is slightly off subject... can you get your hands on engineer reports and everything to do with the underpinning? If so speak to a broker that deals with towergate they specialise in the non-standard insurance and underpinning..
I like to think I can help but its for discussion purposes only so if I get it wrong please feel free to correct me.

Have got all the original plans etc from the contractors (through archives at planning office), cant get engineers report as its too long ago and their archives dont go that far back- planning office wont let us have copies due to copyright!!!

Have sent off an application for towergate today however are a little di heartened at Adrian flux turned us down :(
