I'm sure you really need to be in receipt of other benefits apart from HB/CTB to qualify for any concessions.

PDSA vet treatment if you have any animals, I have this, well worth it. college courses cheaper. At our adult education you only pay £10 per course. Thats about it.
  • I hadnt thought of college course - will look into this now. I am already in receipt of child tax credits if this makes any difference.

Discounted public transport - check your local travel companies website.

  • There's no discounted public transport where I live.

There is a discount for using council leisure facilities though (swimming pools, sports centre, golf courses and gym). In my area, you need to apply to the council and show proof of benefit. You are then issued with a card that entitles you (and your children if you also apply for cards for them) to use the facilities at a reduced rate. You need to provide passport sized photos for the cards.

If you receive child tax credits only and have an income of less than £16k (ish), your eldest should be entitled to free school meals, if he isn't already getting them.

You may also be able to get help with things like music lessons.

Plus, I think you should be able to apply for the Home Access Grant for a computer...

I say all this, but do you have a partner...?
  • Our income is over the £16000 ish threshold so cannot apply for any of these and yes i do have a partner. Thanks for all your help - has given me a few things to look into. i will definately take up the leisure card offer.
