i am interested in finding out when everyone does their food shop as in weekly, fornightly, monthly etc. Do you think it is the most cost effective for you to shop at the time you do?

I try to stick to one weekly shop, but usually end up having to pop in for fresh bread, milk, etc. I probably end up going to the supermarket 3 (or more!) times a week. :think:marlasinger0

Milk usually seems to be dated about a week ahead so I only need to restock weekly. I freeze bread in day sized portions on the day of purchase and defrost them overnight so I always have "fresh" bread to eat.0 -
I have timed it many times, and it takes me 45 - 50 seconds to get from my front door to Morrisons.
This coupled with the fact that I usually walk past it a couple of times per day means I don't do a big shop at any time. I just pop in every day and pick up what I need.0 -

5-6 miles round trip to my nearest.
But the co-op in the village is close;) But I don't get much in there.
I shop weekly, I have a bread maker & I buy skimmed UHT milk (we just like it) so weekly works well. I try & be really orgainised because I HATE going out of my quick (mainly country) route home to go via a supermarket to pick things up:mad:0 -
I shop daily. I live in London, have at least four 24-hour supermarkets within 30 minutes of my home and can do this. I do this for several reasons:
1. I find that I go into a supermarket and can get so caught up in the reductions, the deals and offers that I buy stuff I don't need. It never gets eaten and I throw stuff out, waste of money, waste of time, waste of my arms carrying stuff back home! (I don't drive). As I shop daily, I see the said bargains and think to myself "can I /will I eat that today/tomorrow?" if the answer is no, it stays on the shelf, even a reduction, no matter how close to 10p it is, is not worth it if I'm not going to eat it!
2. I have only one pair of arms, normally have a very heavy bag full of wet gym kit, trainers and etc, I can only carry so much home with me. At best a few days of food, not an entire week and definetly not an entire month!
3. I only have a small fridge and small freezer, I cannot store fresh food for more then a few days.
4. I love fresh fruit, but it has to be fresh: apples have to 'crunch' when I eat them- not have the texture of a mushy powder, melons need to be sweet, not taste of plastic as they have 'died' and fresh vegetables need to be just that: fresh. I can keep a few days worth, but as my neighbour below me likes to wack up his heating, I can only store fresh food in the fridge and anything not in the fridge goes back pretty fast- saves me heating my own homw though!
5. An old dieting trick is to not stuff your cupboards, if the food isn't there, you cannot eat it!
6. I do though think the once a day/every other day shopping began when I was a student and had to life off reduced foods. You learn when and what time to shop and aside from it becoming a habit and slight addiction, at the time I had not alot of money for food(still don't really!) and had to shop this way. I guess it just now feels normal.0 -
I do one shop a week in Asda but there are things I buy in Aldi, Lidl or Farmstores too. So, for me, it's Asda every week and the others when I'm passing (stuff I buy in there is more for storecupboard so I don't need it so often).0

I do a monthly shop, and then pop in once per week to get fresh fruit & veg etc for the week ahead.
With our meant, we break it all up into meal-sized portions and freeze it. This way, we have to decide the night before what we want, and can't 'decide' to have take away/eat out, as we know that if we don't have it, it'll have to be thrown out. Works well for us!0 -
I go as and when I need things now but with pets needing fresh veg I tend to need to go every few days at least.. if I buy only when I need things I do spend far less.
I nearly always walk as if I take the car I ALWAYS buy extra things and spend more money plus walking with shopping cuts it to essentials!! I live in London and can walk to Morrisons in 10 mins and Asda in 20 mins although other stores ie Lidl/Sainsburys are 40-45 mins walk.. and Waitrose is even further!
I always take a list and mostly stick to it but if there are offers on things that are part of my normal essentials I will get them in advance.0 -

That explains why you are always up to date with the offers there

Wow- always take my hat off to people who can shop monthly- you must have a huge freezer! What do you do about fresh fruit and do you ever end up throwing away too much gone-off food? (just curious as I've never ever shopped for more then about 5 days at a time:eek:)0
